For Lou Vierra, owner of Lou’s Beauty Salon in downtown Los Banos it’s all about relationships with customers.
Vierra graduated from Los Banos High School in 1968 and worked for Joseph Silva who owned the salon at the time. In 1975 Vierra and her husband Frank purchased the business and building, located at 515 I St. and has owned and operated it ever since.
She said she still has clients today whom she has cut and styled their hair since 1968.
“You get to know people and become friends,” Vierra said. “This is a personal business.”
During the Covid-19 pandemic many businesses including hair salons were forced to temporarily close. It was during this time that Vierra decided to take a, “leap of faith,” she said and renovate the inside of her salon.
“You’ve got to be actively building your business to stay in the game,” Vierra said.
Removing walls, a fresh coat of paint and installing new floors has given the business a whole new look and feel she says and has helped provide more distance between customers which is important during this pandemic.
She has five beauticians currently working in her business and has room for one more. She offers all aspects of hair care, blow dry, highlights color, perms, manicures, pedicures, waxing and says that she is the only person in Los Banos who is licensed and insured with a Merced County permit to offer permanent makeup to customers.
When asked about the future and how long she will be in business she said, “I’ve always said two more years for the past eight years and I’m still here.”
