Dear Merchants,

The Los Banos Police Department has been made aware of a planned event on June 2 near City Hall.  The Police Department is aware of the event and is taking steps to prepare.  Their goal is always to protect the rights of our residents, including those who wish to lawfully and peacefully protest for their cause.  We encourage the organizers for this event to reach out to Chief Brizzee at (209) 827-2501, he would gladly help facilitate this events success.

To our downtown merchants: we have no reason to believe this event will be anything more than a lawful and peaceful gathering.  LBPD will be monitoring the event and hopes to facilitate its success, but in light of what has transpired across our Nation, we understand your concerns.  Tomorrow, the LBPD will be working with me as the event unfolds.  Our goal will be to provide our downtown merchants with as much real time information as possible.  I will pass this information directly to the Los Banos Downtown Association and the Los Banos Chamber of Commerce who will help disseminate the information out to the merchants.

There is a variety of steps you as a downtown merchant can take, we are not comfortable asking you to close, during the scheduled time of the event…COVID has done enough of that already.   But, if you choose to close your business, we support you and ask that you let me know of your decision.  In other jurisdictions we’ve seen merchants move their vehicles from the immediate area, purchase goods to help reinforce and protect their front façade.  But again, at this time we do not have information to suggest that this event will be anything but a peaceful gathering.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me directly at (209) 827-2433.

It’s ok to be cautious and to prepare for various scenarios, but please do not give into fear; don’t believe everything you see or read on social media.  Continue to care for your fellow residents, smile and care for one another and know that LBPD and the City will be here to support all of you.
